Holidays to Bronte, Sicily |
Around
the far side of Mount Etna you can find
Bronte. This town lies in the western shadow of the volcano. The Arabs were
the first to take advantage of the fertile soil around here and their legacy
of pistachio nut trees can be found here. Local shops sell pistachio nuts
and products such as pistachio ice cream. There is a pistachio festival
in October. Pecorino cheese is also very popular here.
Local
History
In the Piazza Leone XIII stands a 16th century Cathedral dedicated to the
Holy Trinity. Inside is a 16th century wooden crucifix and 18th century
frescoes.
Just outside the town in contrada Piana Cuntarati is the old Lambardo farm. It has been made into the Museum of Local History and Civilisation.
Just
over twelve kilometres away is Nelson’s Duchy or castle. The residence
given to Admiral Horatio Nelson is found on the Bronte - Maniace road. Nelson
never actually visited this grand house but King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon
in1799 gave it to him as a gift. It is now a museum and tourist attraction.
