Holidays to Castelmola, Sicily |
When approaching Taormina, Castelmola can be seen perched above, commanding a hill top view right along the coast all the way over to Italy. The road up to the town is one of those windy twisty roads where you get a wonderful view of the steep drop down the mountainside and so is a journey for those who enjoy adventure.
Castelmola
has the ruins of a medieval castle that overlooks the coast, Mount
Etna and Taormina and the views are spectacular.
As the town is small it can be explored easily as you walk round winding
streets. There are the usual tourist shops and some lovely cafés
and restaurants where you can admire the view. One bar, called Bar Turrisi,
is decorated with ceramic penises and so is somewhere different to have
a coffee! Also on sale is the local vino alla mandorla (almond wine) Buses
run hourly from Taormina. If you come by car
you will have to park near the bus stop, as cars are not allowed in the
centre.
