Shaped by eruptions...
Catania lies in the shadow of the infamous Mount
Etna and has been shaped by eruptions over hundreds of years. If you
fly to Catania airport on a clear day you can
see the top of this spectacular volcano. The current city dates from 1694
after it was destroyed by earthquake and an eruption. The architecture is
of a Baroque style and it is pleasant to explore and admire the buildings.

the city...
Catania is famous for its patron saint, Sant' Agata, and there is a festival
held every February to celebrate her life. The Piazza del Duomo, found
at the heart of the city, has a fascinating Fountain of the Elephant (Fontana
del Elefante) designed in 1736. It combines a lava stone elephant, dating
from Roman times, with an enchanting Egyptian obelisk.

- Civic Museum
- A 13th Century Castle - built by Frederick II, surrounded by a moat
- Bellini Museum - which was once his home of this famous composer

With a thriving night life, promenading carries
on until the early hours of the morning. If you prefer more relaxing holidays,
what could be better than sitting on the balcony of your private villa,
witnessing a warm sunset over this picturesque city?

of Catania are certainly no exception. With many high quality restaurants,
you can experience the infamous menu of Italy,
yet eating out does not have to be expensive. There are also Sicilian snack
bars, called Tavola Calda, to be found alongside the varied restaurants.
As a busy university city there are many bars and cafes to choose from.
Getting around...
If you wish to hire a car on your holidays,
you will be able to truly discover what Sicily has to offer. Everywhere
on the island is within driving distance. You may wish to vist
the set where The Godfather was filmed.
