Holidays to Cefalu, Sicily |
Just
about an hour from Palermo, Cefalu is the sophisticated
town by the sea. It has a beautiful crescent shaped beach and is ideal for
sun worshippers and water sports enthusiast. The sea is beautiful and blue
and the beach is long and caters for everyone. There are the usual lidos
and public beaches and many restaurants and bars here.
Many Sicilians come here for their summer holidays and it can get really busy in August but don’t let that you put off as it is a lively and pretty place to be. There is also a small port lined with fishing boats and a boardwalk along the beach is very popular for evening strolls.
The
town itself has many unspoilt medieval streets that you can wander down.
Cefalu originally was a Greek settlement and was called Cephaloedium derived
from the Greek for "horse". The Romans captured it in 306 AD who
used it as a port to control the Tyrrhenian Sea.
In 857 AD the Arabs came and then in 1064 The Normans decided to come along. Now it is quite happy under the control of the happy Sicilians, who just want to be beside the sea!
