This is the cradle of Greek civilisation in Sicily and once rivalled Athens. The city of Siracusa dates back to the 13th Century BC. It is an extremely exciting place to visit. Dionysius lived here and so did the famous Archimedes, the man who cried Eureka!

in History
The Greeks and Romans ruled here and their influences can be seen at the
Neapolis Archeological Park where there is a Greek theatre, a cave named
after Dioysius, and Roman tombs. There is an APT tourist office just outside
the park, opposite this you can find the entrance to the Roman amphitheatre
used for gladiatorial fights.
During May and June there are Greek classical dramas performed at the Greek theatre. Tickets are available form the tourist office or you can ring 0931 674 15.

In Siracusa itself the architecture is magnificent and it is a good place just to explore. You can often find it difficult to put your camera down, so pack a few extra reels of film!
