Fishing
Village
This little fishing village has a lovely harbour for local boats and you
can sit and watch the fishermen mending their nets. The locals fish every
morning and night. If you go in the evening as it is getting dark you can
see the boats just out to sea close to the coast.
Little single lights shine off the boats into the sea so that the fishermen can spot octopus or fish.
There
is a bar overlooking the harbour where you can have a cappuccino and a cake
and watch all the local activities. Opposite is a pizzeria and restaurant
called La Conchiglia (Tel - 095 7641575). There is a small sea front walk
where you can promenade with the Sicilians. There is no sand here but large
lava rocks that edge the sea, where in 1329 an eruption meant lava rolled
down to the sea. In summer there are platforms built on the lava to sunbathe
on.
Just
North of the Stazzo is another small village called Pozzillo; the two villages
almost join together. This has a wooden hut in the area near the small harbour
where you can go and buy the morning’s fresh catch from the fishermen.
You will see all the locals there queued waiting for their fish. Also there
is a tap to get spring water running down from Mount
Etna. Both villages are close to Acireale
and Giarre and are worth visiting.
