Zafferana Etnea stands on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna and has magnificent views of the mountain and the coast. Zafferana is derived form the Arabic word meaning yellow with reference to the presence of extensive areas of saffron and broom in the zone surrounding the town. At the centre of this beautiful town you can find the Cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady of Providence, which has a lava stone stairway leading up to it.
The
Municipal Park has an amphitheatre that hosts numerous performances of great
interest during the summer.
Zafferana Etnea produces 15% of the nations honey, which is sent all over Italy and the world. La Cantina Del Miele in Via G. Verdi is an interesting place to visit to see how the honey is extracted. Apicoltura is found in Via San Giacomo and the Sicilian Beekeepers Consortium is found in Via 1V Novembre.
The town is also famous for its sweet cakes, wine and mushrooms. The towns restaurants are excellent and good value and the pizzas are exquisite. Il Porcino is an excellent restaurant and pizzeria on Via Alcide De Gasperi, Tel 095 7082801.
There
are many festivals including cinema, drama and dance from July to September
and in August there is the Feast of Our Lady of Providence. In November
there is the Wine and Chestnut festival.
Just down the road is the famous vineyard called Murgo, where you can buy wine and olive oil. There is also a restaurant Via Zafferana 13 S.Venerina Tel 095 95 05 20.
Another good restaurant serving local Italian food and cuisine is at Monacella. It is called Trattoria A Munacedda Via G. Matteotti, Monacella - S. Venerina Tel 338 81 20 054.
For keen walkers there are many local routes to follow across the mountains of varying length and difficulty.
