The Weather and Beaches of Sicily
Climate
Sicily delivers the lovely hot and sunny climate of the Mediterranean.
- The Winters - Mild (see pic below), although in January and February you do need a coat on cooler days. Of course the higher up mount Etna you go in winter the colder it gets and full warm weather gear is required.
- Spring and Autumn - Can be quite hot at times, if you're not keen on the mid-summer heat and are planning on doing a lot of walking, this maybe your best time to visit.
- Summer - Can be really hot! July and August are when the island is at its busiest because this is when all of Italy is on holiday.

Beaches
The beaches in Sicily are beautiful and varied. Sicilians love the beach
and will stop there all day, taking their lunch with them. The sea is clear
blue and calm to swim in.

Sunbathing
Sunbathing and lying on the beach is considered an art form in
Sicily! Some beaches are public where you take your own umbrellas but quite
a lot of beaches require payment at Lidos. Sicilians like to sunbathe in
comfort and will hire a sun lounger and umbrella for the day. Some Sicilians
will hire them for the whole season and go every day. The Lidos often have
changing facilities and toilets and cafes, some have car parking places
as well.
Because being on the beach is important, many people do not have swimming pools and prefer the beach so that they can socialise and watch other people.
In August the beaches are very busy and this is an experience in itself. On the public beaches Sicilians will go early in the morning and stay until late in the evening, taking all their meals for the day. Unloading their cars and actually getting to the beach is like an expedition.
Beaches vary. Some are pebbly and some are sandy. Giardini Naxos, Mazzaro, and Letjani are sandy and the sea is shallow. Fondachello is a pebbly beach and the sea gets deep quite quickly. Some beaches around Sicily are rocky but special platforms are built to sunbathe on. (These are found away from the main tourist resorts)
